RER = 70 × kg^0.75, times the life-stage factor (Pet Nutrition Alliance). Dogs vary by up to 50%: weigh yours every few weeks and adjust. If you feed treats, take them out of the daily total.

Enter your dog's weight and life stage. Add the calories per cup from the bag to see cups a day.

How it works

Resting energy = 70 × weight in kg^0.75. That figure is multiplied by a life-stage factor (1.6 for a neutered adult, 1.8 for an intact adult, 1.2 to 1.4 for an inactive dog, 1.0 for weight loss, 2 to 3 for growing puppies) from the Pet Nutrition Alliance. Treats get 10% of the total, as the WSAVA recommends.

Individual dogs can need up to 50% more or less. Weigh your dog every few weeks and adjust. Check with your vet before a weight-loss plan.
